Ottawa Brings Fred Home!
The Ottawa Senators made a deal with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks yesterday to acquire Ottawa born goaltender Fred Brathwaite. Brathwaite will fill the very vacant backup goaltender spot, behind starter Roman Turek.
The Sens sent RW Vitali Yachmenev to the Ducks in exchange for the veteran tender. Vitali will be missed but will be utilized better on the Ducks roster. Vitali is a solid all around winger but was slated to play on the Sens 4th line or even the farm depending on how his training camp went.
In a recent interview with Sportsnet news Fred stated, "I'm just really excited to return to my home town and play in front of Canadian fans. My family still lives there and I love the Country. Every time I return to play I remember how much I miss it. Besides, Ottawa seems to be moving in the right direction with their new GM and I think they are a solid organization to play for."
The Sens are still looking to make some moves to get their team into the playoffs this year but filling that empty backup goaltending spot definitely increases their chances. The one-two punch of Roman Turek and Fred Braithwaite will give the players in front of them confidence no matter who is in the net.
