Junior Capitals Down Junior Panthers on Home Ice
The Washington Junior Capitals outgunned the Florida Junior Panthers to claim a 5-4 victory on Day 3 of the preseason. Lance Moynch scored a pair of goals and had an assist to lead the Junior Capitals to the win, their second in two games.
After failing to capitalize on an early power play opportunity, Washington scored a pair of goals late in the first to take control of the game. Cory Urquhart scored the first from Peter Pohl and Igor Shadulov at 15:20. Matthew Hansen then made it 2-0 from Moynch and Sean Kotary 1:20 later.
The Junior Capitals' offensive onslaught continued in the second period. Moynch netted his first of the game from Ivan Baranka and Shadulov at 3:38. Jean-Claude Sawyer made it 4-0 when he scored from Patrick O'Sullivan and Gennady Stolyarov at 5:56. Florida finally got on the board 3:16 later on Paetsch's goal from Tallackson and Rouleau. Washington had another late power play but failed to score and regain the four-goal lead.
The third period began with an early penalty to Ryan MacMurchy, but the Junior Capitals killed it off successfully. Unfortunately Florida scored two goals at even strength to make it 4-3. Tallackson scored the first at 9:44, and Korovkin netted the second from Enstrom and Bochenski at 12:08. With the lead down to one goal, Washington struck back quickly as Moynch scored his second of the game from Kotary and Zbynek Novak just 27 seconds after Korovkin's goal for Florida. The Junior Panthers fought to comeback in the game, but Rouleau took it a little too far and he was ejected for a charging major at 16:08. Despite being a man down for the rest of the game, Florida scored a late goal at 19:26. Koivisto was the scorer from Enstrom and Richardson, but that was the last goal of the game and Washington held on for the win.
Brad Topping stopped 30 shots to earn the win. Lukas Mensator made 15 saves in a losing effort for Florida.
The Junior Capitals are off on Day 4 before returning to action on home ice against the Junior Devils.
