Capitals Edge Maple Leafs for Second Straight Win

The Washington Capitals were outshot 40-30, but Manny Legace stood tall to give them a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Day 19. The win ups Washington's record to 4-4-1 for the season.

After a scoreless first period, the Capitals got on the board first in the second. Jonathan Cheechoo was the scorer from Frantisek Lukes and Cory Sarich at 6:33. Toronto dominated the period, outshooting Washington 18-6, but they couldn't take advantage of the edge in shots or a late power play.

With a 1-0 lead in the final period, the Caps had a chance to extend the advantage on the power play midway through the action. The Leafs, however, had other ideas and stopped everthing Washington threw at them. Toronto picked up momentum with the kill, and Smyth tied the game 1:10 later from Murray and Sekeras. The Capitals didn't quit after Toronto tied the game, and Anson Carter netted the game-winner just 25 seconds later. Michal Rozsival and Dan Snyder assisted on the goal.

Legace finished with 39 saves to pickup the win and improve to 3-4-1. Evgeni Nabokov stopped 28 shots in a losing effort for the Leafs.

Washington returns to action in Boston on Day 20.
