Capitals Flummoxed by Flyers

The Washington Capitals saw its three-game unbeaten run end on Day 96 in a 6-3 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. The loss drops Washington to 16-24-7.

Washington came out quickly in the opening period and had the lead after just 50 seconds. Mikael Renberg got the goal from Frantisek Lukes and Radoslav Suchy. Philadelphia answered back with a pair of goals near the middle of the period to take its first lead of the game. Brind'Amour scored first from Leeb and Kalinin at 8:27, before Arnason netted on the power play from Schutte and Kalinin at 11:05. The Capitals responded with two goals to turn the tide back in its favor. Rob Blake made it 2-2 when he scored his fifth of the year from Renberg and Anson Carter at 12:43. Forty seconds later Zigmund Palffy converted from Renberg and Carter to make it 3-2.

The Flyers tied the game late in the second period to setup a winner-take-all scenario for the final 20 minutes. Savage was the scorer from McCauley and White at 18:03.

With the game on the line in the final period, it was all Philadelphia as the orange and black scored three times to secure the win. Leeb got the game-winner from Brind'Amour and Neckar at 11:17. White then scored a double to put the game out of reach. The first came from McCauley and Savage and 11:52, and the second from Savage and Liles at 19:14.

Manny Legace struggled in goal for Washington, stopping 24 of 29 shots in the loss. Peter Skudra made three saves in relief. Chris Osgood made 25 saves to earn the win and improve to 17-20-2 for Philadelphia.

The Capitals return to action on Day 97 against Montreal.
