Senators Harpoon the Sharks!
The Ottawa Senators surprised everyone last night as they annihilated the San Jose Sharks at home by a score of 7-3. GM Schmucky asked reporters, "I didn't think we'd scored 7 goals all year, let alone in one game!"
Ottawa came into the game riding a 4 game losing skid and seem destined for failure this season with some pretty sad numbers.
The Senators opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by Brendan Morrison who's play has been less than impressive of late. Poti and Ryder added assists on that goal 50 seconds into period one which definitely set the tone for the rest of the game. Halfway through period one, Ryder scored his first of the night, second point of the period, on a beautiful pass by Captain Dick Tarnstrom. This gave the Sens the lead going into the intermission.
Period two started off slow but after a stupid roughing penalty to Nikolai Alexeev, the Sharks came within 1 goal as Niedermayer scored his 5th of the year. However, Michael Grosek quickly answered back for Ottawa on a beautiful individual effort to retain a two goal lead going into the 3rd period.
Petr Sejna and Jere Lehtinen put the game away scoring goals two minutes apart to give the Sens a 4 goal lead that they would not look back on. Nedved and Smirnov added late goals to give the Sens a 7-3 victory. Roman Turek made 26 saves in the effort.
