Capitals Grounded by Red Wings
The Washington Capitals lost its third straight game on Day 85 in a 3-2 setback to the Detroit Red Wings. With the loss, Washington is now 14-22-5 for the season. The Caps are just 7-16-2 over the last 25 games.
Detroit got off to a good start in the opening period, scoring twice in the first 7:55. Goc netted both goals, the first from Grigorenko and Schultz at 1:47, and the second from Grigorenko. Washington finally got on the board through Patrick Marleau from Rob Blake and Frantisek Lukes at 12:30.
Neither team scored in the second period, but the Capitals managed to tie the game late in the final period. Zigmund Palffy was the scorer from Anson Carter and Todd Warriner at 14:30. Detroit answered right back, however, and Fedorov netted the winning goal from Fischer and former Capital Langenbrunner at 15:57.
Manny Legace stopped 24 shots in a losing effort for Washington to fall to 11-19-2. Olaf Kolzig made 17 saves to earn the win for Detroit and improve to 23-11-5.
The Capitals return to action on Day 87 against the New York Islanders.
