Junior Capitals Down Detroit
Brad Topping made 42 saves to lead the Washington Junior Capitals to a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Junior Red Wings on Day 99. The win moved Washington to 22-24-5, three points out of the final playoff spot in the Wales Conference.
The Red Wings came out flying in the first period and fired 22 shots on the Washington goal. Topping was spectacular, stopping all but one shot over the 20 minutes. Nepriayev scored the only goal for the Wings from Kristek and Nilsson at 15:52.
Washington bounced back to play a much better second period, and a pair of goals in the first 2:45 gave the Capitals the lead. Andrew Joudrey scored first from Brett Carson and Lance Moynch on the power play at 1:21, before Henrik Tallinder netted from Sean Kotary at 2:45. Greg Mauldin dropped the gloves with Grot just over five minutes later. The pair fought to a draw, but the action seems to fire up the home side. Detroit finally tied the game with just 31 seconds left in the period on Svensson's goal from Lehun and Bykov.
The Capitals jumped out quickly in the final period to seize a two-goal lead they would not relinquish. Maxim Orlov netted the eventual game-winner from Kotary and Zbynek Novak at 3:16. Fabien Laniel then added an insurance goal, his 10th of the season, from Carson at 5:27.
Topping earned the win for Washington to improve to 12-16-3. Oliver Dannel stopped just 20 shots to take the loss for Detroit.
The Junior Capitals are off until Day 103 when they visit Florida.
