WEBER READIES FOR CAMP

Carolina

Hulking defenseman Shea Weber has been added to the defensive camp for this week and he is going to show he deserves full time duty in the junior ranks.

Weber, despite being third in defensemen scoring on the Canes, currently is considered the seventh defenseman on the team. While adding 27 points may seem like the dynamic defender has had a good season, head coach Craig Hartsburg said this about his young protege.

"Shea is a guy that will be an impact player in the future. Unfortunately, at least for me, he is not getting the lessons of defensive responsibility. I do not mind him rushing the puck or trying to make things happen but he needs to see that there is more to the game than scoring points. Shea is a guy who needs to use his body better. He is strong as an ox but he plays like a lamb. I need that fire to show up and I need him to catch on to what I am saying."

Weber, who has taken the criticism as guidance rather than an attack, has gladly accepted his camp assignment this week.

"Craig was an NHL defenseman and he knows what needs to happen," said Weber. "I can sit here and be upset with every one about his, but in truth it is me who has to make the next step. I just want to learn and I want to play. If this will make me better, I am all for it."

Weber will join team mate Jeff Carter at the camp. For the time being, Shea Weber will watch Alex Goligoski, the player who essentially has taken Weber's spot in the lineup, get more ice time in his absence.

"I am not mad at Alex. He is in the same spot as me and he just wants to play. He and I are similar in that we both think offense first, but I guess coach wants me to get back to the basics. That is fine. When I get back, I will take my spot back. That is the hope anyways."
