The Boston Bruins Season Preview - Martin Havlat
Martin Havlat, the Bruins forward with the second most points last season - tied for the third most goals at twenty-six, and tied for the team lead with forty-eight assists, for seventy-four total - returns intent to prove he belongs on the first line.
He has a better attitude and improved pretty much every fact of his game to step up to the next level. "I spent most the summer with a speed and skating coach, and believe that will show on ice this fall. I also spent some time with a conditioning coach, which did wonders for my hair as well," Havlat explained.
He also spent extensive time with Jari Kurri, working on passing and puck control. Havlat explained, "The way I saw it, I couldn't just focus on one or two things. If I want to elevate my game, I want to do it across the board. I expect to be the man this year, and if this is what is necessary, than so be it - I thrive for it."
Asked if pending free agency after Season Seven contributed as well, Havlat shrugged. "Of course I am always aware of my contracts and the paychecks. It is not the motivation though. We embarrassed ourselves last year, and it is time to redeem us."
The devoted Boston fan base certainly hopes they will. Havlat is expected to start the year on the second line with Saku Koivu, n an effort to get an advantage on opponent's second line defenses.
Prediction - 82 games, 35-50-85
