JR CANES DOWNED BY DEVILS

Carolina

With the momentum on their side, the Carolina Hurricanes Junior club felt that they would have a relatively easy contest versus the New Jersey Devils. It even seemed that way early when Jeremy Colliton buried his fifth of the season just over a minute into the contest, but in the end, that was all the team received offensively and they found themselves in a 2-1 loss.

The newly formed line of Dustin Penner, Stephan Dixon and Colliton was the only group that were able to find the net. They were able to maintain a strong forecheck and utilize their size to their advantage.

On the back end, Braydon Coburn was injured on somewhat of a fluke play after team mate Corey Perry went in to hit Devil Brady Murray and accidentally clipped Coburn on the way. Perry also ended up boarding Murray and was called for a 2 minute minor.

Jonathan Boutin, netminder for the Canes, had another good start and neither of the goals could be faulted on him, but overall the Canes did not bring enough enthusiasm to match that of the Devils.

Of note, Jordan Smith left the game in the second as well, after a scrap with veteran defenseman David Hale. Smith was mainly unwilling to fight but Hale had other plans and while Smith fought back, he was never really set up to go with the bigger Hale. Hale was also given a game misconduct for his assault on the young Jordan Smith. Smith attempted to return but in the end was forced to leave the game. The injury should not effect his status for this evenings game as he is listed as a probable starter for that contest.

The Canes head to Ottawa this evening where the Junior Senators await.

The Sens and Canes both have identical records this season and sit at 4-4-1 a piece.

The Canes will likely go with Jeff Glass in net and the possibility of a different looking lineup is probable. In the absence of Braydon Coburn, iIt also marks the return of veteran defenseman and assistant captain David Cornacchia, a much needed left hand shot from the point. Cornacchia is arguably the team's best offensive defenseman and his addition to the lineup should help bolster a power play that will need to be on tonight against their division rivals.
