Capitals Slip in Edmonton

The Washington Capitals dropped its second straight game on Day 74, falling 5-2 to the Edmonton Oilers. The loss puts Washington at 14-23-3 for the season.

Edmonton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening period and never looked back. Primeau started it off from Wallin and Wiemer at 4:00, before Niinimaa made it 2-0 from Kariya and Allison at 6:12. Allison extended the lead 4:03 later from Kariya and Krivokrasov.

Washington finally got on the board midway through the second period with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart. Todd Warriner struck first from Dan Boyle and Patrick Marleau at 10:36. Jonathan Cheechoo pulled the Caps within one when he netted from Severin Blindenbacher and Frantisek Lukes. The Oilers went back up by two 4:08 later. Krivokrasov got the goal from Allison and Kariya at 16:38.

The Oilers ended any hopes of a Washington comeback early in the final period when Allison scored his second of the game and 20th of the season from Kariya and Allison at 6:32.

Kevin Weekes stopped 10 shots in the loss and fell to 4-8. JS Giguere made six saves in relief. Ty Conklin earned the win after making 32 saves.

The Capitals are back in action on Day 75 in Dallas.
