Capitals Host Islanders in Preseason Opener

The Washington Capitals host the New York Islanders in their first preseason game on Day 2. It will be the second game for the Isles as they visit Atlanta on Day 1. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m., and all fans in attendance will receive a free souvenir magnet schedule.

Washington is coming off a season of transition where the team finished eighth in the Wales Conference at 33-42-7. Despite bowing out to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs, the Capitals took two games from the eventual Stanley Cup champions and gained some momentum for Season 5.

The offseason saw GM John Henry splash the cash to add major free agents Rob Blake, Anson Carter, and Zigmund Palffy. Now after a hard training camp regime, the team is ready to begin the preseason schedule and finally face off against another team.

New York was one of the elite teams in Season 4, and expectations are no less this season. The Islanders finished 51-24-7 -- 109 for the second best record in the league. New York advanced to the Wales Conference finals where they fell to Tampa Bay in six games. Nothing less than a Stanley Cup finals appearance will be acceptable for the New York crowd.

It's only the preseason, but the game should be a good test for the Capitals as they measure up against one of the best teams in hockey.
