Capitals Run Off Rink by Red Wings
The Washington Capitals dropped its second straight preseason game on Day 5 in a 2-0 setback to the Detroit Red Wings. The Capitals are off the next two days before hosting the Atlanta Thrashers. Fans are not encouraged to attend as Washington will rest as many first team players as possible since the Thrashers are a bunch of hooligans.
Detroit opened the scoring in the first period when Williams netted from Grigorenko and Kuznetsov at 6:59. Washington had to fire up the penalty killing unit just seven seconds later when Cory Sarich took an elbowing minor, and the man-down unit did the job.
The Capitals killed off two more penalties in the second period, but the Red Wings still managed to extend their lead. This time it was Schultz scoring the goal from Hlavac and Grigorenko at 12:21. The penalties were to Artem Chubarov for charging and Sarich for boarding.
Sarich took his third minor in the final period, but neither team scored as Detroit skated off with the victory.
Tommy Salo made 28 saves in the loss. Olaf Kolzig stopped all 26 shots he faced to pickup the shutout victory.
