Senators Beef up their Blueline

The Ottawa Senators have had a surprisingly successful preseason so far and things are only looking better in the capital city. Much of this preseason's success can be attributed to the Sens newly acquired GM, Schmucky. After inheriting a team that had dismal hopes for the future, Schmucky is slowly piecing together this team to become a potential playoff candidate.

The offseason trades to pick up Brendan Morrison and back-up goalie, Fred Brathwaite were definitely steps in the right direction. Recently, Schmucky has continued to improve the team by acquiring two veteran defencemen to beef up their young blueline.

The first deal found Tom Poti coming to Ottawa. Poti is a veteran leader on the point for the Senators who were seeking some leadership and defensive prowess to compliment Tarnstrom's strong offensive skill base. Poti gives the Sens a 1st line defender with a long-term contract. AT 6'3" 215 lbs. Tom will be a much needed physical presence in the D-zone and in front of Ottawa's net.
The second player to become a Senator this week was Alexei Zhitnik. Zhitnik was acquired from the Edmonton Oilers for Brad Ference and James Demone.
Ottawa feels they came out on top of this deal as Edmonton was simply concerned with dumping salary to make room for their new franchise player. Zhitnik is also a veteran leader who is defensive minded but possesses offensive skill as well. Alexei is a proven passer and playmaker that will make Ottawa's PowerPlay stand out.
