CANES ACQUIRE TUCKER

Carolina

After much hinting of a possible trade for a right winger, the Hurricanes pulled the trigger on a deal acquiring the scrappy winger from Edmonton. Tucker, 30, comes to the Canes with a reputation for being an aggressive and defensively sound competitor night in and night out.

"We thought that Darcy could bring us a lot of spark to our team, especially on the second line," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "He is one of those energy guys that other players tend to feed off of. He hasn't had the best of years so far but we are hoping he can step in and make an immediate impact for us."

The Canes have been relying heavily on the Cory Stillman, Alexei Kovalev and Jeff Friesen line as of late and it has not disappointed. Kovalev had a hat trick two nights ago and his two linemates have been making plays all season long.

"Kovy has brought a lot of offense to a team that needs it. He is a strong player when he has the puck and makes plays that are not possible."

In the deal for Tucker, the Canes sent away disgruntled forward Jay Pandolfo, a free agent acquisition in the offseason. Pandolfo was said to be bothered by his lack of ice time, although he was a regular on the heralded shut down line in Carolina. The staff, along with various players had said that the swan song of Pandolfo’s had grown short.

Also moving was steady defender Jesse Wallin. The former Team Canada junior captain had been an excellent acquisition for the Canes this season, but in the end, was a key trade component of the latest deal.

The Canes take on the Los Angeles Kings tonight in Tucker's debut.
