Capitals Fall to Blues

The Washington Capitals outshot St. Louis 27-22, but it wasn't enough as the Blues skated to a 5-2 victory on Day 12. The loss drops Washington to 2-3-1 for the season.

St. Louis came out quickly in the first period and scored three unanswered goals. Richards started the scoring from Kariya and Dvorak at 4:40. Moreau made it 2-0 when he netted his first of the season from Richards and Hrdina at 15:30, and Leclerc extended the lead to three goals just 1:09 later when he scored from Corbeil and Hrdina. The only positive of the period for Washington was a successful penalty kill after the Leclerc goal.

The Capitals fought back in the second period when Dan Boyle scored his first of the season from Anson Carter and Andrew Ference at 15:54. Unfortunately it was the only goal in a stretch of missed chances for Washington. Two power play opportunities led to little offense from the Capitals.

St. Louis regained their three-goal edge early in the final period when Saviels netted from Richards and Moreau at 6:39. Washington fought back again just over three minutes later through Zigmund Palffy from Boyle and Ference, but the Blues put another goal on the board to put things out of reach. Richards was the scorer to cap his excellent night. Moreau and Saviels assisted on the tally.

Manny Legace struggled in goal, stopping just 12 shots in the loss. Peter Skudra had five saves in relief. Bret Johnson made 25 saves to earn the win for the Blues.

The Capitals return to action on Day 15 against the Panthers.
