Junior Capitals Pound Junior Panthers
Greg Mauldin scored two goal and added an assist to lead the Washington Junior Capitals to a 6-3 victory over the Florida Junior Panthers on Day 11. The victory lifts Washington to 2-5 for the season.
The Capitals got off to the perfect start on the road when Zbynek Novak scored from Mauldin after just 33 seconds. Washington then took advantage of an early power play to make it 2-0 at 3:29. Bolf was in the box for Florida when Mauldin scored his first of the game from Gennady Stolyarov and Brett Carson. The Capitals continued to pour it on and just 2:33 later it was 3-0. This time Ivan Baranka was the scorer from Novak and Jakub Cutta. Florida tried to turn the tie with a fight, but Mauldin held his own agaisnt Borodkin. After killing a late penalty, Mauldin netted his second of the game from Lance Moynch and Mikhail Kuleshov to give Washington a 4-0 lead at the intermission.
Florida turned up the heat in the second period, but Washington did a good job defensively to limit the Panthers to just one goal. Stonkus was the scorer from Bochenski and Bobrov on the power play at 1:12. The Capitals killed off another penalty later in the period to preserve the 4-1 advantage going to the second intermission.
Washington put the game out of reach quickly in the final period when Kuleshov scored from Carson and Stolyarov at 0:15. Florida responded with a goal of their own through Borodkin at 3:34, but once again the Capitals scored to upset the home fans. This time it was Moynch from Cutta and Andrew Joudrey at 13:39. The Panthers added a late goal through Radulov, but it wasn't nearly enough as Washington held on for the victory.
Brad Topping stopped 28 shots in the win and improved to 2-5. Billy Thompson made 13 saves in the loss. Ville Hostikka had six saves in relief.
The Junior Capitals are off until Day 16 when they host the Junior Devils.
