JUNIOR CANES NEW GUNNER CAN SCORE, BUT CANES CAN'T WIN

CAROLINA

After the Hurricanes made the Niedermayer deal, a transaction that saw one of the league's top snipers find a new home in Carolina, the Hurricanes junior squad has not been able to help the team get back on track.

Junior Lessard, the strong power forward, was immediately moved onto a line with veteran Brandon Reid, the sleek playmaker as well and the speedster and team's leading scorer Sergei Mozyakin. The trio looked to have instant chemistry, but unfortunately, the Canes still have yet to find any sort of momentum.

"Lessard was able to bury two of his chances tonight," said Craig Hartsburg, the team's head coach. "He kept fighting and really competing hard on every shift. He plays with probably the teams best two skaters and they really were cycling the puck well. I can't figure out why this hasn't worked though, our team is too good to not be winning these games."

Also of concern to the coach was the lack of production from Nigel Dawes. The diminutive forward has been a thorn in the sides of teams for two seasons now but the little offensive dynamo has not impressed many with his lazy play as of late.

"Nigel is counted on to produce. That is what he is there for. We need goals, goals and more goals from him. If he isn't scoring, he isn't doing his job. I don't ask him to play defense, he couldn't win a face off if he was up against his grandmother and I really doubt he is big on going head to head with the league's heavies. I want goals."

The Canes take on the Vancouver Canucks junior squad tonight, in what could be a game full of fire works. The Cane's have reportedly been scouting some of their young juniors. With trade rumours swirling around Hurricane land, the season could start to get interesting.
