Grosek has Career night as Sens knock off Wings

The Ottawa Senators played the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night in Ottawa. The team was coming off of a night off and a light practice that GM Schmucky thought would give them some time to see their families and friends after a long, strenuous road trip.

As a result, Ottawa was a little slow out of the gate as the Red Wings owned the 1st period firing 15 shots at Roman Turek but scoring no goals. Turek kept the Sens in the game with a great performance in the first period but the fans were less than impressed with Ottawa's lackluster effort.

The Senators responded quickly though as they came out with guns blazing in the second period. On their 2nd PP of the game on a highsticking penalty to Brian Willsie, Selanne made no mistake notching his 3rd of the year assisted by Grosek and Nedved. Less than 2 minutes later, Grosek scored his 1st off of a great passing play orchestrated by Zhitnik and Morozov. Finally, less than 2 minutes later AGAIN, Petr Nedved scored his team leading 6th goal of the season on a gorgeous pass from Zhitnik and Grosek. A stunned Kolzig could only shake his head as a 6 minute lapse in Defensive zone coverage by the Wings put the Senators up 3-0. The Wings would answer back on goals by Fedorov and Williams. But another silly penalty to the Wings would put the game out of reach as Grosek would score his second goal of the night and season on the PP to give the Senators a 4-2 lead.

The 3rd period would be pretty boring as the total shots were 7-5 in favour of Detroit. Their lack of discipline definitely put the game out of reach as a major and minor penalty would kill off the entire 2nd half of the 3rd period for the Wings.

Grosek played outstanding with his first ever 4 point night and stated, "The bounces were just going my way. I wanted to have a big game tonight to show Schmucky that I could step up with Rico out of the lineup and respond positively to the extra ice time I'll see in the next 4 games."

The Senators will enjoy another 2 day rest at home as they suit up for a very tough Tampa Bay team on Tuesday night that could be a big teller as to how solid this surprisingly strong Ottawa team is.
