Capitals Tie Penguins 3-3
Patrick Marleau scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Washington Capitals to a 3-3 tie with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Day 8. The point ends a two-game losing skid for Washington and moves the team to 2-2-1 for the season.
The Capitals came out jumping in the first period, and Marleau lit the lamp after just 2:10 to make it 1-0. Linemates Todd Warriner and Zigmund Palffy assisted on the tally. The goal proved to be the only score of the first 20 minutes, a period that saw the Capitals outshoot Pittsburgh 14-8.
Washington extended the lead to 2-0 on the power play early in the second period. While Mitchell was in the box for highsticking, Anson Carter put one past Trevor Kidd from Rob Blake and Marleau. Pittsburgh took over after the goal, however, and a goal from Markov at 12:27 made it 2-1. The Penguins then took advantage of a Washington penalty to tie the game. Greg Watson went to the box for elbowing, and Battaglia scored from Markov and Parise at 14:23.
After matching minors early in the third, Washington took the lead again at the 10:09 mark. Frantisek Lukes was the scorer from Marleau and Cory Sarich. The lead only lasted 5:05, however, as Phillips netted from Parssisen to tie the game and force overtime.
Washington held on for the tie in overtime after killing a penalty to Andrew Ference.
Manny Legace stopped 31 shots for the Capitals. Kidd had 26 saves for Pittsburgh.
Washington is off until Day 12 when they visit the St. Louis Blues.
