CANES KOVALEV KEEPS CAROLINA CONTENT
Carolina
The Hurricanes got an offensive surprise from their prized right winger Alexei Kovalev when the explosive Russian buried his first hat trick of the season as the Canes downed the Ottawa Senators 6-5. Rookie netminder Robert Gherson made his second start of the season and picked up his second win.
"We have been trying to get Kovalev shooting more," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "He knows he is paid to score goals and that he did tonight. I haven’t been upset with him or anything, but for whatever reason, I simply expect more."
The Canes offense got a much needed boost from several players with multiple points. Captain Shane Doan, assistant captain Mike Fisher, Cory Stillman and Jeff Friesen all had 2 points in the contest.
"We needed a game like that," said Doan, who also led the team with a plus 3 rating. "Game like these are good confidence builders and I think our squad wanted to pick up the offensive totals. Shootouts are fun, but we have to also figure out why we let in 5."
Of note, rookie goaltender Robert Gherson was pulled in the start, but still picked up the victory. While his performance looked poor on paper, Gherson made the saves he should have and Carolina defenders can be blamed for 4 of the 5.
"We all take responsibility," said Jay McKee. "Last thing we want to do is leave the kid by himself, but I guess it shows the confidence the guys have with him back there."
Carolina is off tonight, but there are rumours swirling about a possible deal with the Hurricanes franchise.
