Junior Capitals Burned by Junior Devils
Jakub Cutta had a pair of assists and the Junior Capitals managed 37 shots, but it wasn't enough as the New Jersey Junior Devils beat Washington 3-2 on Day 16. The loss drops the Capitals to 2-6-0 for the season.
Washington got off to a great start on home ice when Fabien Laniel took advantage of a Cole charging minor to make it 1-0. The goal came at 3:24 from Matthew Hansen and Cutta. Both teams failed on power plays later in the action, but a quick double from the Devils late in the period turned the game on its head. Kaigorodov got the first from Vondrka and Kubista and 15:29, and Rosehill made it 2-1 from Thompson and Mosovsky at 17:42.
The Capitals struggled in the second period, but the penalty killers did the job. Washington kept New Jersey off the board for two man advantages, and then tied the game during a four-on-four situation late. Greg Mauldin was the scorer from Cutta and Ivan Baranka at 17:51.
With the game tied entering the final period, the Capitals pushed for the winning goal, but unfortunately it was the Devils who would strike. With Laniel in the box for elbowing, Keith netted from Cook and Cole to give New Jersey the victory.
Brad Topping made 31 saves for Washington in the loss. Jeff Drouin-Deslaurier stopped 35 shots to win his fourth game of the season.
The Junior Capitals return to the ice on Day 17 at home against the Minnesota Junior Wild.
