CANES EXPECTATIONS RISE

Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes have started the season off with a lot of fire and determination. The Canes currently sit atop of the Eastern Conference with a sparkling 9-3-1 record. Carolina has also received strong goal tending from stellar netminder Jose Theodore so far this season, squashing rumours that the organization has been unhappy with the 29 year old.

"Theo gives us the chance every game to come away with the two points," said assistant captain Mike Fisher. "Our team is a very good squad at coming back and helping out in our own end."

Defensively, rugged defender Jay McKee continues his legacy as one of the league's top defensive players. This season, however, McKee has shown a bit of offensive flash with 10 points in 13 games.

"It is always good to snag a few points," said McKee. "I really do not put much thought into it though. My job is to keep the puck out of the net, bottom line. If I get a point here and there, it is a bonus."

Up front, the Canes are led by three point a game players. Cory Stillman, the slick playmaking center leads the team with 17 points, Alexei Kovalev has 15 and speedster Jeff Friesen has 14. Mike Fisher is sitting at 12.

"We have the depth this year," said Fisher. "This league has a big offensive focus and you need to be able to roll with the big boys. I do not think we have the offense to bury the bigger teams but we have the total package to be in any game at least."

The Canes face conference rival the Buffalo Sabres tonight.
