Junior Capitals Go Down Again
Fabien Laniel and Cory Uruqhart scored a goal and assist each, but it wasn't enough as the Washington Junior Capitals lost to the Edmonton Junior Oilers 5-3 on Day 23. With the setback, Washington is now 2-9 for the season.
After killing an early penalty, Edmonton got on the board first through Gusakov from Genovy and Senez at 4:34. The Oilers made it 2-0 less than four minutes later when Caron netted from Mikhnov and Norrie at 8:26. Despite failing to score on a power play of their own, Edmonton extended the lead to three goals on Brenk's goal from Dwyer and Demone at 17:19.
The Capitals finally got on the board early in the second period. Laniel was the scorer from Brett Carson and Jean-Claude Sawyer at 0:46. After Laniel's goal the teams played a great up and down game but neither could get on the board. The penalties started coming fast and furious at 13:52 when Edmonton's Caron and Greg Mauldin took coincidental minors, but less than a minute later the gloves dropped between Senez and Laniel with a draw the result. After the fight, the Oilers got on the scoreboard again through Shafigulin from Dwyer and Flache, but just 22 seconds later another fight broke out. This time Flache beat up Patrick O'Sullivan and Flache was ejected. An Edmonton charging major at 17:07 gave the Capitals a five-minute power play, and Urquhart scored to make it 4-2 at 18:46. Matthew Hansen assisted on the goal.
Any hope of a Washington rally ended early in the final period when Hogeboom scored for the Oilers from Stephenson and Pock at 4:42. The Capitals did add a third goal when Gennady Stolyarov converted from Urquhart and Laniel at 14:56, but it wasn't enough.
Daniel Taylor stopped 21 shots in the loss, while Brad Topping made six saves in relief. Dave Leneveu made 32 saves to earn the win for Edmonton.
The Junior Capitals are back in action on Day 24 in New Jersey.
