Bruins have ball with Blues, claim victory
After taking verbal abuse from St. Louis Blues GM Percy Foley, who claimed his team would make the Bruins "his b*tch", the Boston hockey club invited the 'Notes into their home - and then beat them with their sticks.
More than fourteen thousand fans showed up for the grudge match, which sadly, did not end up with money wagered on it. Despite Foley's original offer of a $2 million bet, the Bruins had to pass due to fiscal tightening the team is still experiencing, a carry-over result of the previous regimes and the buydown of Keith Tkachuk's bloated deal. Even after the home gate, the team has less than $2 million of cash to utilize; however, the turnstiles have been spinning more frequently with the teams undefeated streak now at seven games.
In fact, in the last ten games, the Bruins are now 7-1-2, and ride a two game winning streak into their day off Friday afternoon before hosting the New York Rangers on Saturday in an early puckdrop.
The Bruins quickly staked claim as to who would be bending over and taking it in the ass - the "b*tch", if you would - as Brent Johnson grabbed his ankles reaching for a save on Andy McDonald, only to find himself butts-up and the puck behind him in the net at 00:28 of the first period. It was McDonald's ninth of the season, and Lars Jonnson and Jochan Hecht were credited with assists on the play.
The frustration came out a bit later, as Nic Corbeil was whistled for a vicious cross-checking hit against McDonald. Corbeil stood victorious over McDonald, who had his bell rung, but was able to return to the game minutes later, missing only one shift.
In the second period, the Bruins retaliated, as Richard Jackman got whistled for two separate roughing calls at 09:35 and 19:00 into the period. The latter earned him a game misconduct, and he left the ice to the raucous cheers of the crowd. Jackman leads the team in penalty minutes with 82, and is the leading contender for the team's effort to win the Lays Crunch-er award.
Come the third period, the Bruins were nursing their 1-0 lead when Zdenek Kutlak was boxed for roughing double minor. Sensing the sad song was wailing back on the Landing, the Blues took advantage of their fourth power play of the game, as Taylor Pyatt scored less than a minute into it.
The teams ended regulation tied, but the Bruins defense once again silenced an opponents offense. Just like in Toronto a few nights earlier, the B's D kept the opponent from getting a shot off. It was not until more than two minutes into the frame that the host fired its first at the goal, as a run of passes lead to an Andy McDonald-Jochan Hecht-Richard Jackman-back of the net series, claiming victory for the home team.
The Bruins improved to 4-6-1 at home and inched them closer to their goal of an overall .500 record. As the team skated off the ice, Robbie Ftorek was asked for his thoughts.
"Tell Foley that we're even now for the season, but he who laughs last gets to be on top. So bleach your anus tonight, sweetie - cause you are my b*tch now."
