NIGEL DAWES MAKES IMPRESSION, DOWNS DEVILS
Carolina
As the Hurricanes started to surge early in the season, the New Jersey Devils came to town. The Hurricanes, who currently sit second in the conference with two games in hand, defeated the Devils 3-2 on the strength of scrappy winger Nigel Dawes 3 point performance.
The Devils netted two goals of their own from former Hurricane prospect Igor Mirnov, the slick sniper.
After being down a goal early by Mirnov, the Canes went to work. Dawes got the puck in deep and cycled the puck until he found an opening. Brayden Coburn, the enormous defenseman, snuck past the Devils defenders and received a pretty feed from Dawes to bury his third of the season.
The second Canes goal happened off of another pretty pass from the diminutive forward, this time setting up pivot Jeff Carter in the slot for his ninth. 16 seconds later, again it was Dawes, this time receiving a pass from Junior Lessard and the young winger went in alone to pot his seventh of the season. That goal would prove to be the winner and Dawes the obvious choice for player of the game.
"Nigel has really stepped up his game since returning from camp," said head coach Craig Hartsburgh. "He has a lot of awareness and he can really use his linemates out there. He is generally considered a finisher, but the kid can pass, as he showed us all tonight."
Since moving Dawes to a significant offensive role, the left winger has demonstrated his offensive talents. Dawes currently sits at 7 goals and 10 assists for 17 points in 17 games, a point a game for a player who struggled early.
"I think coach having confidence in me has helped out a lot," said Dawes. "I figure I can only improve with ice time."
