Capitals Edge Islanders

The Washington Capitals ended a four-game winless streak on Day 87 in a 4-3 victory over the New York Islanders. The two points moves Washington to 15-22-5 for the season.

New York opened the scoring late in the first period when Sedin netted from Poulin and Bates at 19:33. The Islanders outshot Washington 9-4 in the opening 20 minutes.

After just 27 seconds of the second period it was 2-0 as Timonen scored from Poulin and Sedin, but Washington came alive after the goal. Anson Carter scored his 15th of the year from Bryan Berard and Zigmund Palffy at 3:40 to make it 2-1. Under four minutes later the game was tied when Greg Watson netted from Cory Sarich and Mark Eaton at 7:17. The Capitals then took advantage of a power play opportunity to take its first lead of the game. Berard got the goal from Rob Blake and Palffy at 16:06 while New York's York was in the box for cross-checking.

The Islanders bounced back in the final period to tie the game with the man advantage. With Peter Tenkrat sitting for elbowing, Delmore converted from Peca and Arkhipov at 8:13 to make it 3-3, but the Caps would not be denied on this night. Todd Warriner scored the game-winner on an excellent individual effort at 10:50 to shock the home crowd.

Manny Legace made 32 saves to earn the win and improve to 12-19-2. Dwayne Roloson stopped just 23 shots for New York in the loss.

The Capitals return to action on Day 89 against Pittsburgh.
