CANES CHANGE LINES, WELLWOOD PICKS UP 5 POINTS

Carolina

After giving the young centerman praise after helping win the GM challenge with the Bruins, young Kyle Wellwood doubled his efforts against the Atlanta Thrashers. With a new power play in hand, the Canes went 2 for 3 and defeated the Thrashers 6 to 2.

Wellwood, 23, picked up a gaol and 4 assists, now placing him 3rd on the team's scoring chart with 20 goals and 30 assists in 56 games. More importantly, Wellwood sits with a +22 rating, impressive for a sophomore center in a league as challenging as Clutch.

"Ever time he is called on, Wellwood shows up," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "Personally, I fully believe in this kid as the team's future number 1 center. He has shown flashes that he is ready for it now, but having a savvy veteran like Cory Stillman and a defensive gem vet in Kris Draper, the rite of passage seems a lot easier for young Welly."

The Canes switched up a few things on their two power play units, and the combination of Wellwood, Fisher and Tucker seemed to work wonders down low against a slower Atlanta defense. Wellwood notched both power play goals in the contest.

"It was good to get everything going again," said Wellwood. "Our power play had not looked good for some time and hopefully this inspires us for the next game."

The Canes get to take on the Thrashers again in a rematch this evening.
