JUNIOR CANES RETURN HOME FROM SUCCESSFUL CAMP
Carolina
When Stephen Dixon and Jeremy Colliton went away to improve their puck control kills, the hope was they would be able to go that extra mile and possibly contend for a spot on the roster next season. After this camp, it seems that may become more of a reality.
"They worked very hard this week," said head trainer Anders Steinnenberg. "Dixon probably got a bit more out of it but I think Jeremy has shown the reason why he was a former first rounder in CLUTCH. He is the complete package and his puck control skills won't hinder him in any way. I think after the two return here in a couple weeks for scoring camps, they will be difference makers indeed."
Colliton, 19, has been slower to progress than initially though. Drafted late in the first round in the 2005 draft, Colliton has spent all of his time on the farm squad, wishing to make it to the big club. A noted defensively gifted forward, Colliton's real gift is his ability to lead on the ice and make few mistakes. The hope is his offense will develop to match his own defensive coverage.
"This camp opened my eyes a lot," said Colliton. "Dix and I have been sitting down there for a while and I figure that now that we both see how we can compete, the next level is in sights for next season."
Dixon, on the other hand, had a stronger camp but the expectations for the aggressive winger are a little less.
"Dixon has lesser high end speed and his puck control will be an issue at the next level unless we can find a way to tweak that. He can easily become a banger though, he is intense and he can find a man in the open ice like a shark looking for blood. He hits like a train wreck and that might be his calling card. A touch around the net and a killer instinct."
Dixon, 18, is a lot like Colliton in his reputation. A combatative 2-way forward who rarely gives up on plays.
"His desire will carry him to the next level. It is his skillset I worry about for competing for a spot in the CLUTCH."
Scoring camp will occur in 3 weeks, a telltale time for the gritty duo.
