CANES TAKE DOWN BRUINS IN MEANINGFUL GAME

Carolina

The setting was Carolina. The teams were the Bruins and Hurricanes. The challenge was issued by the Bruins crafty general manager and it was accepted by the Canes. The stakes were high, especially in a competitive league such as this and the wager was simple.

Win or produce a positively charged article for the league about your opponents general manager.

"It was a bet I was willing to take," said Mark Lohaus, GM and partial owner of the Carolina Hurricanes. "I felt all along this team had the stones to make it this far, but a challenge issued by another GM is often something I can't turn away from. He challenged me and I in turn challenged my boys. I went all in."

The Hurricanes wasted no time to prove their worth as the two offensive centers Cory Stillman and Kyle Wellwood each buried a goal in the first to set the tone.

7 Minutes into the second, it was Wellwood again who sniped his second of the game and 19th on the season. The creative sophomore continued to show off his dazzling talents tis season and now sits at an astonishing 45 points in 55 games, despite being injured and missing 6 games previously.

"Welly has been a catalyst for this squad," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "We dealt Brendan Morrison, who was our top center last season, in order to make room for Kyle in the lineup. When the season started, it didn't look good for us and then we acquired Darcy Tucker from Edmonton. Since uniting those two with Jeff Friesen, the Canes second line has often been our top line and Kyle gets a lot of credit for that. He has surpassed many of my expectations already and I am excited about what he will do in the future."

The Bruins, however, were not so impressed and battled back within two when Andy MacDonald scored his 23rd of the season. It wouldn’t hold up long however when Cory Stillman, the veteran forward on the squad, netted his second of the game and restored the 3 goal lead.

"We got lazy and forgot to play right after that goal," said Shane Doan.

9 seconds later, Keith Tkachuk scored to bring the Bruins back within 2. The crowd was ansy and began to yell at their squad. Rattled, but not out of it, the Canes went to the dressing room to regroup.

"It was gut check time," said Doan. "We looked at one another and said that we are not going to lose this one. We had struggled recently but this was a game we could not lose. Theo stood up and said, get me one more goal and I will do the rest. We replied on the ice."

Marian Cisar, the often criticized offensive winger, took the game in his own hands after streaking in on the left side and roofing his 15th of the season past Andrew Raycroft, former OHL goalie of the year. The Bruins were able to muster one more goal, but Theodore stood strong the rest of the way and turned away the final 7 shots for the victory.

Canes win the game and the challenge, but full credit to the Bruins for coming out hard.

"Last time we played, Matt Walker was the highlight," said Quenneville. "This time around, with no Walker, we had to show up as well. I'm glad we did."

The Canes final score was 5-3 and the club outshot the Bruins 38 to 24.
