JUNIOR CANES CLOSING GAP

Carolina

While the Carolina Hurricanes pro team has been struggling as of late, the explosive offensive power of the junior Canes is starting to help the squad rise in the standings.

Led offensively by power forward Junior Lessard, the twin offensively gifted pivots Jeff Carter and Brandon Reid, the Canes have made a lot of matchups difficult for opposing teams. With the sudden surge of offense from Nigel Dawes, Jeff Tambellini and Ryan Getzlaf, the Canes boast a significant group of forwards who can put a lot of points on the board quickly.

"It has been a slow process getting some of these guys to play in their own end," said head coach Craig Hartsburg, "but the offense was always there. These guys love to score and from a coaching perspective, it makes a lot of things easier with the options we have."

With veteran blueliners David Cornacchia and Tomas Mojzis, who is currently second in the league in defenseman scoring, running the power play, the team has a lot to be happy about.

"The tandem has worked well since we acquired them from New Jersey a couple seasons ago. They compliment one another and they distribute the puck well between each other and whoever they happen to be playing with. There is rarely much decision making, they read and react and simply make plays."

In net, a struggling Rob Zepp made the team worried early on. While Zepp, 25, is a veteran of the league, he was not playing up to potential, alarming some in the organization enough to go out and acquire the rights to young netminder Jeff Glass, a promising young goalie and former member of the team Canada junior program.

"Every team needs a goalie who keeps them in the game. Rob was the guy and he dropped the ball early. I think his confidence is back where it should be. We need him there until Glass or Boutin are ready."
