Capitals Secure Sponsorship Revenue
The Washington Capitals secured $2,700,000 in sponsorship revenue during Season 5 after the club met the requirements for a local TV deal with NBC and the goal-scoring deal with Wal-Mart.
For the local TV deal, the Capitals needed to average 14,000 tickets for home games. The club easily passed this mark with an average attendance of 15,681. This was quite a remarkable performance after the Caps averaged only 12,848 in Season 4. With the addition of star defender Rob Blake and strong players Zigmund Palffy, Anson Carter and David Vyborny, Washington put a much better product on the ice and the fans responded. Improving 13 points in the standings also helped energize the local populace.
For the Wal-Mart deal, the club needed to score 200 or more goals to earn $1,200,000. The team could also earn another $500,000 by scoring 250 or more. The Capitals scored 258 goals this season to achieve both benchmarks. Last season Washington scored 237 goals.
