CANES MOVE PICKS FOR JUNIORS
After a disappointing first round loss, the Carolina Hurricanes added some junior help for the upcoming season. Mark Mancari and Andrej Sekera were acquired in exchange for a 4th and 5th rounder and an undisclosed amount of cash.
In Mancari, the club has picked up a powerhouse forward with a big shot and some aggression. Mancari, the former standout of the Ottawa 67's, has always been known as a big body with soft hands.
Sekera also was picked up. The former Owen Sound Attack defenseman had a brilliant junior career ended early with an injury and is looking for some redemption this year with the junior Canes.
"These two fill a void for us that we needed addressed," said head coach Craig Hartsburg. "Both guys have skill and both should be able to contribute this season."
Mancari especially should be front and center in the Canes plans. The big forward has a knack for scoring big goals and is ready to step up.
"Guys around the league know all about the Canes junior club," Said Mancari. "They are deep and very dangerous. I know they have a pile of guys graduating this year, but from what I can tell, they have a wild group of guys returning. I am hoping to get in the lineup and make some noise this year. This is sort of the year for me. I either step up or decide to make a new career for myself."
Sekera will likely have a more difficult time making the club. With several returning and talented defensemen all vying for the same spot, Sekera will have to show off his skills early in camp. Craig Harstburg looks forward to the competition in camp.
"We have the six defense already decided on this year. If Andrej wants to be a part, this is where he proves he belongs. I am more than comfortable with the guys we have this year so he has to show me something. Depth is always a bonus though when you are a coach and I look forward to the options."
