Silence in New York is Deafening
Other than a deranged appearance at the draft the New York Rangers and their General Manager have been completely incognito since a the New York Islanders put disapointing end to a highly successful year. The Rangers have stood by and watched as players have flown back and forth across the league with rivals like the Hurricanes, Bruins making major moves as well as incoming GMs in Phoenix, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Chicago.
The General Manager of the Rangers is still unavailable and rumours have it he is heavily medicated in a mental or addiction centre in the Tri State area.
The team, however, is looking very good for the upcoming year. There still are not very many teams that can boast players on the top two lines that are as strong as the Rangers' best:
Line 1
15 Mats Sundin C R OK 63 77 73 73 89 74 75 83 82 69 79 85 91 81
46 Todd Bertuzzi LW L OK 76 73 88 71 89 64 74 90 81 67 87 67 77 85
12 Daniel Alfredsson RW R OK 69 75 71 91 92 74 78 89 86 75 86 75 75 85
86 Karel Pilar D R OK 76 81 78 74 66 44 81 75 75 83 77 58 47 81
6 Wade Redden D L OK 76 75 75 80 90 78 78 77 74 81 77 67 76 82
Rumour has that Fedorov will move back to right wing as he did during the 1995 season and Dumont will move back to left wing. The second line could look like this:
72 Mike Ribeiro C L OK 61 77 71 72 73 55 81 82 82 71 77 54 51 79
38 J-P Dumont LW L OK 52 77 72 73 89 62 75 80 85 78 80 77 65 81
93 Sergei Fedorov RW C OK 50 83 62 63 89 65 79 79 75 67 77 78 74 77
29 Jonathan Girard D L OK 70 76 72 68 80 63 73 75 72 79 69 53 40 77
37 Brad Lukowich D L OK 60 66 70 76 90 61 68 70 75 79 66 61 67 75
Which leaves the 3rd line at:
34 Par Backer C L OK 59 80 66 75 79 51 82 77 70 62 76 54 51 76
98 Alexei Poinikarovsky LW L OK 69 80 77 77 68 43 82 80 73 65 84 47 45 80
18 Pavel Bure RW L OK 60 91 45 68 52 70 86 70 80 54 92 68 55 77
But Bure or Ponikarovsky could easliy move up to the second line as well.
Vezina runner up Mike dunham between the pipes should help the Rangers keep the goals against down.
8 Mike Dunham G L OK 89 85 79 89 91 85 85 77 83 NA NA 56 74 80
The Rangers are looking good with plenty of fire power and speed but have holes on defence and role players to fill. Rumour has it the Rangers GM could be back on line by as early as this weekend.
