Capitals Clobber Chicago

Artem Chubarov scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead the Washington Capitals to a 6-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Day 29. The result moved Washington to 6-8-2 for the season.

Chicago jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Mrazek scored his fifth of the season from Boguniecki and Mara at 4:26. Washington ratcheted up the pressure after falling behind and Chubarov tied the game from Mark Eaton at 11:46. The Capitals outshot Chicago 17-9 in the period.

Washington turned it on in the middle of the second period and scored four goals in a span of just 1:31. Zigmund Palffy started it off with a goal from Patrick Marleau and Cory Sarich at 11:24, before David Vyborny made it 3-1 from Oleg Saprykin and Jonathan Cheechoo at 11:51. Frantisek Lukes kept it going from Chubarov and Petr Tenkrat 30 seconds later, and Tenkrat scored a goal of his own from Chubarov and Andrew Ference at 12:55.

Marleau added the final goal at 9:55 of the final period. Cheechoo and Eaton provided the assists.

Manny Legace stopped 22 shots to earn the win and improve to 3-6-2. Roman Cechmanek made 18 saves in the loss. Dan Cloutier stopped 12 shots in relief.

The Capitals are off until Day 33 when the Coyotes visit the phone booth.
