Capitals Keep on Losing

The Washington Capitals continued down the wrong path on Day 28, dropping a 4-2 decision to the New York Islanders on home ice. Washington managed just 20 shots in the game.

Nagy gave the Islanders the lead in the first period when he scored from Sakic and Popovic at 17:55.

Neither team scored in the middle stanza, but New York came out quickly in the final 20 minutes. Three goals in a 5:25 span put the game away. Poulin scored first from Bates and Numminen at 3:59, before Hagman scored a brace to make it 4-0. The first came from Sakic and Hossa at 5:34, and Sakic setup the second at 9:24. The Capitals finally got on the board on Oleg Saprykin's third of the season from Jonathan Cheechoo and Andrew Ference at 17:51. Mark Eaton completed the scoring from Patrick Marleau and Todd Warriner at 19:09.

Manny Legace made 24 saves in the loss and fell to 2-6-2. Tim Thomas stopped 18 shots to earn the win and improve to 5-0.

The Capitals host Chicago on Day 29.
