Capitals Blow Lead, Fall in Chicago
In a mirror-image of its previous game, the Washington Capitals gave up three third-period goals on Day 24 and fell 3-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks. The loss drops Washington to 5-6-2 for the season.
Jonathan Cheechoo gave the Capitals a great start when he scored his fifth goal of the game from Frantisek Lukes and Bryan Berard at 8:57.
Washington made it 2-0 early in the second period on Oleg Saprykin's goal from Peter Tenkrat and Andrew Ference at 0:55, but despite firing 13 shots on goal in the period, that was all the scoring the Caps could muster.
The Blackhawks came alive in the final period. Boguniecki started the rally from Mara and Brendle at 3:07, before Boynton tied the game on the power play from Sykora at 5:30. Brendle capped the comeback from Rasmussen and Perreault at 12:30.
Kevin Weekes stopped 25 shots in the loss and fell to 3-2. Dan Cloutier made 28 saves to earn the win.
Washington returns to home ice on Day 25 against Toronto.
