CANES WIN IN BRODEUR FINALE

Carolina

With a much anticipated trade now officially complete, the Canes rumbled into Vancouver to take care of some business. The result was a 3-2 victory for the boys from North Carolina and a last game victory for Martin Brodeur.

Limited shots in this contest and several hits were the highlights. Dany Heatley led the game with 5 hits while 9 different players provided a single point for the game. Mike Fisher netted the game winner in the third period on a short handed break away after Kris Draper blocked a point shot and Adrian Aucoin fed a long bomb pass to the assistant captain. It was Mike Fisher's first short handed goal and first game winner of the season.

"It was a team effort tonight," said head coach Joel Quenneville, who seemed somewhat happy about the victory. "The guys came out and played a smart game. Nothing too fancy and they made plays that were there. I like winning these close games because it shows your club has character, something I was not sure we did have."

The Canes now are riding a three game undefeated streak and are now 6-3-1 in their last ten, slowly creeping up on a playoff spot, 1 point back of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

J.S. Giguere and company arrived in Carolina this morning and will take practice later this afternoon. After discussing his role with the new team, defenseman Mike Komisarek has learned he will be put with new defensive partner Ilya Nikulin on the third pairing while Cole Jarrett will be the seventh defenseman to start off his career in Carolina.

Of note, Matt Bradley had to the leave the game with an undisclosed injury. The likelihood is that either newcomer Cole Jarrett or farm callup Ryan Getzlaf will get the extra spot in the lineup during his absence. Bradley has been used sparingly on the 4th line all season long and has delivered some crunching blows. He has not delivered the sort of forechecking game that was expected however.
