Capitals Top Oilers

The Washington Capitals moved within four points of the final Wales Conference playoff spot on Day 55 after a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. The result lifted Washington to 11-16-3 and 9-5-1 on home ice.

After a scoreless opening period, Cory Sarich gave the Caps a 1-0 lead with a power play goal from Oleg Saprykin and Andrew Ference. Edmonton tied the game just 4:19 later when Battaglia netted on the man advantage at 12:37. Artem Chubarov was in the box for boarding at the time of the goal.

Washington regained the lead at 7:52 of the final period. Bryan Berard was the scorer from Jonathan Cheechoo at 7:52. The Oilers evened the score again just 1:14 later. Kariya got the goal, his 20th of the season, from Allison and Boucher. The Capitals earned the victory when Ivan Rachuneck scored his third of the season from Peter Tenkrat and Chubarov at 15:28.

Manny Legace made 24 saves to earn the win and improve to 7-10-3. Brian Boucher stopped 18 shots in the loss.

The Capitals are off on Day 56 before visiting New Jersey on Day 57.
