CANES AND SENS DUAL TO DRAW

Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes and the Ottawa Senators had a defensive battle on Wednesday, and in the end, the two teams could only manage one goal a piece.

Teemu Selanne opened the scoring quickly at the 46 second mark in the first from Dick Tarnstrom and former Carolina Hurricane Michael Ryder, who was dealt in the Eric Daze deal last season. That goal would stand up until midway through the second when Cane's captain Shane Doan evened it up with his fifth of the season. Steve Eminger and Gord Dwyer assisted on the goal.

"The game really came down to Theodore for us," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "Jose has been solid all year, arguably the best goalie in Clutch at the moment, and tonight he kept us in a game we really didn't seem to interested to be in."

The Canes were outshot in this contest 31-24 and gave up twice as many power plays as the Sens, but in the end, strong netminding from the young French Canadian and a timely goal by it's captain helped the Hurricanes gain the point.

"It wasn't a strong game for us," said Jay McKee. "We expect better of ourselves and while we cannot take a team like Ottawa lightly, we really hoped we could get the two points. We want to keep on top of the conference and ties just aren't going to cut it."

The Hurricanes take on the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night. The Pens have been playing well as of late and tend to give the Canes trouble, especially in Pittsburgh. Look for Jose Theodore to get his second consecutive start.
