CANES FORWARD ATTACKS MEDIA
Carolina
After a heated practice Monday morning, veteran sniper Alexei Kovalev met with the press to answer some serious allegations of lazy play and disenchantment with the team.
"I don't see my play as dropping off," said Alexei Kovalev. "I think you are the ones making up stories about me for news. Our team is tops in the league and I have to read the paper saying oh Kovy is upset, Kovy hates the captain. You all should be ashamed. Let me be."
Kovalev stormed off but was stopped by beat reporter Jacey Williams of Channel 3, the Spot. Williams, 36, apparently suggested that Kovalev was just mad because he is being outplayed by a couple youngsters. Kovalev slapped the recorder out of his hand and pushed the Channel 3 reporter to the ground.
"I think Alexei needs to grow up," said Williams. "I am just trying to do my job and if he is mad because he isn't doing his then too bad."
"Personally, I think this is all getting out of hand," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "Everyone needs to take a breath and relax a bit here. Alexei has been doing fine for us and no one is upset with him. We are back on track now so I think the heat can let up on the guy."
The Canes take on the Red Wings tonight. Kovalev looks to be front and center again on a line with Cory Stillman and Mike Fisher. After a good practice, look for that line to step up.
