CANES PREPARE FOR RANGERS

Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes look to escape a mid season slump as the squad visits the New York Rangers Sunday evening. The Canes, who are 4-5-1 in their last 10, are hoping the deal of Kovalev brings the club new energy and a positive new start for some of the kids.

"This team is really looking for some good news," said head coach Joel Quenneville. "It is a resilient bunch but I think right now, the morale is down. Dealing Kovalev might be a good sign for this club but the team really needs it's offence to pick up again. Cisar might help, but no one player is the answer."

The second unit of Kyle Wellwood, Darcy Tucker and Jeff Friesen has been silent as of late, a trend that had not happened through out much of the first portion of the year.

"That is a line that needs to step up," said Quenneville. "They are essential for our success and we count on them heavily to produce."

Also, the play of Oleg Tverdovsky, who was instrumental to the team's successes last season, has really taken a back seat to other defensemen on the club. Oleg currently has 4 goals and 8 assists in 31 games, well off his pace last year at this time.

Kris Draper has also been noted as not putting up the points needed. Draper, a well known and respected 2 way forward, is more depended on to shut down other squads, was also looked to provide some offensive spark. That has not happened.

"Whatever the reasons, we are losing," said Quenneville. "It is time to change that or we will make changes, that much you can count on."
