Toronto Tops Capitals

Patrick Marleadu scored Washington's only goal as the Capitals fell to the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 on Day 55. The loss is Washington's second straight and drops the team to 11-13-3.

In a hard-fought first period, the Leafs opened the scoring through Sekeras from Horcoff at 19:22. The goal only gave Toronto a 1-0 lead, but it was demoralizing for the Capitals and it showed for the rest of the game.

The Leafs extended their lead in a second period that they dominated from start to finish. Sekeras made it 2-0 from Park and Sanderson at 6:56, and Arvedson scored from Olvestad and Sedin with just 14 seconds remaining to make it a three-goal game.

Toronto continued to pour it on in the final period, and Sundin's goal from Kaberle and Numminen at 4:34 made it 4-0. Washington finally got on the board when Marleau scored an unassisted goal at 12:32, but it was nothing more than a consolation.

Manny Legace stopped 24 shots in the loss to fall to 9-12-1. Evgeni Nabokov made 23 saves to earn the win for the Maple Leafs.

Washington returns to action on Day 56 against the New York Islanders.
