The Washington Capitals stayed in the playoff hunt on Day 145 after a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators. Washington is 32-30-11 and in sixth place in the Wales Conference.
After a scoreless first period, Washington opened the scoring midway through the middle stanza. Seldom-used winger Andy Sutton got the goal from Anson Carter and Frantisek Lukes at 11:33. Sutton only played three minutes in the game, but he made the time pay.
Ottawa evened the score in the final period on Holmqvist's tally from Nedved and Petrasek at 10:41, but the Capitals answered with the winning goal just 1:28 later. Patrick Marleau was the scorer at 12:09.
Manny Legace made 20 saves to earn the win and improve to 25-25-8. Mathieu Chouinard stopped 28 shots in the loss and fell to 1-1-0.
