CANES LOSING SKID CONTINUES, ACQUIRE IGINLA

Carolina

The Caolrina Hurricanes have seen their worst fears materialize early on this season. A losing skid that has a lot of the media in Raliegh wondering what was with all the hype.

The top line, which was heralded as the best seen under the current regime, the defense core is supposed to be the best in the league and the goaltender is supposed to be a wall. All of which are not occurring on a consistent basis.

The first casualty of the unacceptable performance is top line right winger Brian Gionta, who has put a mere 2 assists in 6 games and continues to accomplish little on the ice, no pun intended.

Enter Jarome Iginla.

The former captain of the Calgary Flames, who took the Tampa Bay Lightning to 7 games in the finals, is hopefully the guy the Canes can look to provide the skill, toughness, determination and leadership that seems to be lacking.

"We need something in here," said head coach Joel Quenneville, "because whatever we have going on is not working. Gionta is a start. If you want to make a change, change the foundation. That gets people looking. This team is good enough on paper to win so there is something that needs to occur. We can change lines till the cows come home, but we need results from all 20 guys game in and game out."

When asked where Iginla fits into his current lineup, he simply replied he wanted to see the type of on ice persona and that would help determine where he will lineup.

"I am really excited about a new start," said Iginla, who currently sits with 4 assists in 6 games. "Carolina and Calgary are two teams that are pretty similar in where they are. Both of them can win on any given night and really have all the pieces. I really felt out of place there, for whatever reason. I love the guys I played with but we were just off somehow. Brian is a fantastic little player and I figure he and Naslund are going to light it up so I hope I can do the same."

The Canes play Boston next in hopefully a statement game for the newcomer.
