Capitals Escape Pittsburgh With Tie
Zigmund Palffy scored a goal and assisted on two third-period tallies to lead the Washington Capitals to a 3-3 tie against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Day 8. The result moves Washington to 2-2-1.
Pittsburgh jumped out to an early lead in the first period when Zubov scored his first of the season from Satan and Timonen at 3:11. The Capitals battled back to tie the game late in the first. Palffy got the goal from Andrew Ference and Cory Sarich at 18:22.
The Penguins dominated the middle stanza, outshooting Washington 12-2, and scored a pair of goals to take a 3-1 lead. Sillinger netted first from Rolston and Drury on the power play. Lindros extended the lead to two goals when he converted from Elias and Zubov at 13:32.
Washington turned up the pressure in the final period in an effort to get back into the game. Carl Corazzini launched the comeback with a rebound goal from Todd Warriner and Palffy at 5:48. Patrick Marleau then tied the game on the power play from Palffy and Bryan Berard at 13:02.
The Caps recorded the only shot in the extra period but couldn't complete the comeback victory.
Manny Legace stopped 24 shots for Washington to move to 1-2-1. Olaf Kolzig made 15 saves for Pittsburgh.
The Capitals are back in action on Day 9 in Detroit.
