CANES RALLY FOR MUCH NEEDED POINT

Carolina

Newcomer Jarome Iginla popped in his first two assists of his early Canes career, including the helper on the games tying goal via the stick of Dany Heatley. It was not the outcome the team was looking for, but it is good for them regardless as points have not been rolling in freely as of late.

The Canes power play actually showed some life at least as the home town heroes netted 2 extra man goals but in the end it was not enough.

"We need to provide some sort of extra spark out there," said captain Shane Doan, who has not been producing much as of late. "This season has really shown us some weaknesses in our club and right now, we need to fix those. Most of the issues are internal and hopefully we can get out of this funk."

The Canes once again received stellar netminding from veteran Martin Brodeur but allowed far too many odd man rushes. The club also needs to find a way to sustain more pressure in the offensive zone for longer periods of time. At the moment, the team seems to dump the puck in and accept that they are not going to get it back.

"When you play a team like Boston, you need to pressure their D," said Dany Heatley. "We did not do that and that was our mistake. Boston has the guns up front to stay in any game, but overall, their defense should leave openings, but we need to pressure them to do so. We played them far to easily tonight and it was our downfall."

The Canes are still looking for that right combination up front. Look for Heatley to play with Iginla 5 on 5 the next game and possibly see Shane Doan moved up to the second line with Jokinen and Friesen for a possible start.

Of note, Rostislav Klesla is apparently in the coaches doghouse. Leading the team as the worst plus minus, Quenneveille had a screaming match with the talented defender and Klesla left the office and the rink in an obvious bad mood. One might suggest that Klesla will need to get his act in ear or he may find himself on the sidelines watching the games rather than getting the gravy time he is accustomed to.

Ilja Nikulin played another aggressive game and has probably been one of the bright spots for the Canes this season. Nikulin, the rugged defenseman, led the game in hits once again and caused fits for Martin Havlat throughout much of the game.

The Canes have tomorrow off and the hope is they will spend much of their time practicing some new line combos and possibly find a way to get out of their zone quicker. The season is early, but the expectations are high for this club. Something needs to happen now or Gionta being dealt will not be the last move made by an impatient organization.
