CANES TAKE HOME GAME IN FRONT OF CRAZED CROWD
Carolina
With Washington in town, Jeff Glass in nets and a fully rested Carolina squad prepared, the game went off like a fire cracker.
"This was a really crazy, high energy start to the game," said defenseman Shea Weber. "The fans were really into it tonight and when we stepped on the ice, there was a massive roar from them. I think everyone was really pumped and the team appreciates that, it makes us play harder."
The Canes came out hitting as the line of Mike Richards, Stephen Dixon and Jeremy Colliton came out and hit everything that moved. The second unit attempted the same but got caught up in the excitement and ended up being scored on.
"Sometimes you try and play too intense and we got burned,, so we settled it down a bit," said Dustin Penner. "I think once that first goal happened, we got in the groove and took it to them."
The Canes received a quick goal by Mark Mancari, who labelled a shot top shelf to tie the game up. Finnish sniper Lauri Tukonen put the club ahead in the third with his second of the year.
The Capitals replied shortly after but the Canes power play took over from there.
"We worked on some things in practice," said Jeremy Colliton, "and the one thing we tried to do is use our up front size to our advantage and find the open man and get shots on net through screen. It was not working that well early, but we really delivered late."
Colliton, who has become a staple on the power play as of late, notched his second power play goal of the year off a dandy tip in. The game would also hold up as the game winner, also his second of the year.
"He has been mister special teams," said Cam Barker, who let the shot go that Colliton tipped. "He has the two power play goals, he has a shorty and he leads the team in game winners. I would say he is pretty clutch."
The Canes then received their second power play marker as another Finnish gunner, Lauri Korpikoski, notched his third of the year. The Canes ultimately defeated the Capitals 4-2 as Jeff Glass received his first start and win of the season.
"We came to play tonight," said Penner. "This was a good game overall for us. We did a lot of things right and the things we worked on the past couple days seemed to pay off."
The Canes get a day off to heal their wounds.
