Columbus ships Berglund, Beauchemin to Pittsburgh
Columbus, OH
Christian Berglund's tenure as captain of the Blue Jackets has ended. In a surprise trade, the Jackets have shipped Berglund, along with defensman Francois Beauchemin to Pittsburgh in exhange of highly touted forward prospect Dan Fritsche, young centerman Mikko Koivu and Pittsburgh's first round draft choice in next years draft. The trade signals the continued youth movement and cannot be a complete surprise. People close to the team have stated that " the scouts are working overtime" and trades are expected.
Koivu, the younger brother of Saku Koivu, is a big center, with a solid two way game. He is very tough, and has excellent playmaking ability. Something the Jackets have lacked up front so far this season. Koivu will likely get top 6 minutes early on as the coaching staff will likely take a good look at the rugged Fin.
In Fritsche, the Jackets receive a player with a very high ceiling. He has excellent vision, solid skating ability and should become a top 6 forward sooner than later. Fritsche, also has shown leadership qualities even though he's only 20. He is exactly what the Jackets needed.
