Capitals Down Detroit
Dan Boyle scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead the Washington Capitals to a 3-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Day 9. The victory moves Washington to 3-2-1 for the season.
Detroit took the lead late in a closely played first period when Goc netted from Schultz and Svoboda at 15:09.
The Capitals took control of the game in the middle stanza despite getting outshot 12-9. Boyle tied the game from Jonathan Cheechoo and Bryan Berard at 10:06, before a late power play proved pivotal in the outcome. With the Red Wings' Timonen in the box serving a major for kicking, Washington scored a pair of goals to earn the 3-1 win. Frantisek Lukes got the first from Boyle and Todd Warriner at 18:28, before David Vyborny converted from Warriner and Boyle at 18:50.
Kevin Weekes made 27 saves to earn the win and improve to 2-0. JS Giguere stopped 21 shots in the loss.
The Capitals are off on Days 10 and 11 before hosting Atlanta on Day 12.
